RE: Canadian Rockies/

We spent a few weeks there this last summer. The routing info above is very good. Consider entering furthur East and taking Hwy 1 (Trans Canada) and get a feel for the interior plains as well. The roads are as good if not better than those in the US. Don't overlook the smaller parks such as Yoho, Kootenay, Glacier NP of Canada, Mt Robson provincial etc.

RE: 5th wheel size,National Parks ?

Most, but certainly not all, NP campgrounds were built before the advent of larger RV's. A big unit will exclude you from some NP campgrounds. You would still be able to fit in most commercial parks that frequently exist next to the NP's. Same story would go for NFS campgrounds.

RE: Solar Panel wiring routing

I think I did about a one inch hole that made the wires easy to grab. Used expandable foam insulation to fill the holes (just don't fill the whole pipe). Also, if you go up with the wires, they just come out the top and there is no grabbing them. I have my Blue Sky charge controller halfway down the pipe, so I had to fish them out anyway.

RE: Glacier National Park Recommendations

If you plan to hike, I highly recommend the East side. The Many Glacier area has trails that fan out in different directions and are amongst the best in the park. If you are looking for commercial entertainment, the West side is better. East side camping is limited compared to the West. The two main commercial CG's are KOA and Johnson's. NP has Two Medicine in the South, Mary's Lake and Going to the Sun near the entrance and Many Glacier further North. We stayed at fishing lodge near the Many Glacier entrance that also has a few full hookup RV sites. The lodge was Duck Lake Lodge.

RE: Winter camping in Smokies

We all 'KNOW' that Global Warming has melted massive amounts Glacier and ice shelfs which results in masive new amounts of moisture into the atmosphere. Therefore, there must have been, and WILL be massive rain and snow storms these past years and certainly will this year!
Dude, you will be needing to move to higher ground soon. Florida is going to be the next great barrier reef :W

RE: For DIY tire changers only

Had to change my first tire on the road this fall. Had one come apart coming back from the Medicine Bow mountains. A driver passed me and pointed back at the fiver. We pulled it over and had it changed out in about thirty minutes. The tire was totally shredded but the rim was still OK.
We carry a 6 ton bottle jack, four by four blocks, 18v impact wrench and a torque wrench at all times. I did pull the good tire up onto blocks first to make the jacking on the bad axle minimal.

RE: Winterizing 5th wheel

Just did mine yesterday with my son. Took about twenty minutes with the longest time taken waiting for the freshwater tank and the waterheater to drain. Pumping the antifreeze takes less than five minutes.

RE: Solar Panel wiring routing

I routed mine through the gray tank vent pipe also. Drilled a hole in the side of the pipe at the top and in the basement. Pulled the wire, sealed the pipe. Using the refrigerator vent would have made the wire run about twenty feet longer in my case. With twelve volt, you don't want the wire to the controller and batteries to be any longer than necessary to prevent current loss.

RE: Winter at Grand Canyon

Trailer park is open, has hookups and a surprising number of visitors (most appear to be semi permanent workers) though it is by no means near capacity. Shops are open and the trails conditions depend on recent snows. The photo oportunities are awesome but be prepared for the cold. Skies are clearer and the snow adds an extra touch.

RE: Gatlinburg - Cades Cove

We've decided to head to the Smokies next summer so we are starting to keep an eye on the GSMNP posts. It's been close to thirty years since I've been there and it's nice to pick up info here.

RE: Yamaha generrator remote start kit

I have a wired kit that I bought with my genny four years ago. It has been great but it seems the movement now is all toward wireless (you don't have to run the wire, but make sure you have a backup for the battery). I can't recommend the company, because they aren't around anymore.

RE: Lifting a 5ver?

I had a local trailer repair shop raise mine. They added a rectangular frame made of 3 inch square steel tubing. They welded that to the original frame and reattached the axles to the addition, making the rig three inches higher. Flipping axles was not an option. Now, instead of 12'6", I am at 12'9". My rig now rides level and I don't worry about bumping the bed rails.

RE: Laughlin NV to Joshua Tree Natl Park

We did Amboy and National Trails on the way back home last April. Good roads, very little traffic. You do cross over a low pass on the Amboy Road about 15 miles South of Amboy. Make sure you fuel up in Needles area since there is very little between Needles and Twentynine Palms.

RE: MPPT setup question

I've had the Blue Sky MPPT controller running for several years with a generator contributing part of the time and it has not caused any issues. I understand your thinking about each affecting the other, but the bottom line is that the batteries get charged quicker with both than with just one.

RE: Bike Roof Rack

Does the truck roof mount hurt or compromise the seals and allow leaks? Our 5th wheel has the fiberglass molded rear cap that does not have a bike rack hitch. Thanks for any feedback.
Leaking has never been a problem, but it does allow more airflow through the seal which you can hear, particularly when there is a cross wind. In addition, there is some added wind noise. I'm always listening to the radio or music and it doesn't ever bother me but it is there.
Also, carrying bicycles does not affect turning radius at all. Even carrying a 17 foot canoe, there is no possible way to make contact between the two.
The nice things about roof racks: they don't obstruct your vision, they don't fall off the back or wreck your frame, they can go with you any where you take the tow rig. The bad: getting the bike up on the rack and some wind noise.

RE: Passports

Better to have and not need than to need and not have...
It took only ten days for ours to arrive after we dropped off the paper work. Fill out this form, print it, and take it to a passport acceptance facility with a check or cc. They are good for ten years and will be required beginning next year.
